Our Health Physics Monitor apprenticeship is a Level 2, 24-month programme that trains you to monitor radiation and ensure safety across our nuclear facilities. Health Physics Monitor apprentices from part of our Health & Safety area of the business and use specialist instruments to carry out radiological monitoring. The measurements they take are interpreted so protection advice can be provided to Nuclear Operators. They support work activities where radiation and contamination are identified as hazards; taking measurements of radiation dose rates and contamination levels, monitoring personnel, responding to alarms and supporting emergency arrangements. This role is critical to making sure operations on the Sellafield site run safely, and requires a high level of attention to detail, accuracy in recording and interpreting measurements, and the right attitude to health and safety.
Before applying, make sure you’re comfortable with the hands-on, varied nature of the Health Physics Monitor apprenticeship: Two-Year Programme – You’ll complete a structured apprenticeship with training and support throughout. Working Hours – Standard office hours are 07:30–15:40, but there may be occasional 12-hour day/night shifts and weekend work during your training. Work Environment – You’ll spend time outdoors in all weather, sometimes at heights, in confined spaces, and within nuclear facilities. Safety First – PPE is essential in certain areas, including respirators and protective suits, to keep you safe. Some of our personal protective equipment requires you to be clean shaven and make-up free to keep you safe. Training & Qualifications – You’ll build a portfolio of evidence, gain accredited certifications, and complete a final assessment in your last six months to become a qualified Health Physics Monitor.
