The Highly Active Liquor Evaporation & Storage (HALES) facility receives and concentrates Sellafield’s highly active effluent streams for conversion to solid product in the Waste Vitrification Plant.

HALES Technical is a multi-disciplinary team providing support to current and future operations. The team assess the condition and remnant life of HALES assets and develop/implement the washout, decommissioning and contingency strategies for the HAL programme.

A vacancy has arisen within the team to support delivery of work packages including, technical assessments, advising plant on appropriate operational and safety parameters, management and development of process modelling tools to inform future strategic decision making, providing technical guidance to projects/studies and directing work carried out by the supply chain including UKNNL. There are no direct line management responsibilities, however the role will provide opportunities to lead and develop other team members including graduates and degree apprentices, as well as close working with HLWP and exposure to the wider HAL programme.

The successful candidate will become a member of the HAL CoE and will have the opportunity to become SME for a variety of specific areas of interest including solids transport, heat transfer and hydrogen management (liaising with Hydrogen Working Party & Flammable Gas CoE).

In addition to developing technical expertise, the role provides excellent opportunities to raise your profile within Sellafield Ltd and the wider NDA group.

Principal Accountabilities

• Preparation and delivery of technical assessments in support of planned washouts of Highly Active Storage Tanks (HASTs) and evaporators, and future blending strategies.
• Specialist assessment work including future cooling water requirements, hydrogen management strategies, solids transport/mobilisation and heat loading/thermal modelling.
• Specification and management of supply chain task delivery.
• Support to Operations, Plant & System Engineering and Design in task delivery, information collection, interpretation, analysis and performance reporting.
• Liaison with Plant Technical Managers and/or Operations in supporting the development of future capabilities and plant/process improvements, attending and presenting to MSC as required.
• Support investigation and resolution of emergent plant issues, attending ODMs and CDMs as required.
• Attendance at HAL Technical Committee, ensuring appropriate governance and technical assurance processes are followed for the provision of technical support to plant.

Essential Skills

• Experienced technical person with background in an appropriate STEM subject and demonstrated delivery of credible technical work at the appropriate grade.
• Relevant experience working with technical teams.
• Must be able to communicate well with Supply Chain and Stakeholders.
• Demonstrating experience of data collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of information.
• Writing of technical reports and papers for both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Knowledge of the Sellafield Ltd business.

Desirable Skills

• Ability to apply theoretical technical approaches to practical applications within an operations/engineering environment.
• Experience working with external stakeholders and regulators.
• Knowledge of the HALES process and hydrogen management.
• Profession recognition e.g. Chartered with relevant professional body, or Associate/Member with development plan to achieve Chartered status.
