From the city streets to the Cumbrian peaks…

Hi, I’m Neal Patel. Five years ago, I took the plunge and started working at Sellafield.

Curiosity

I began my journey as a graduate, which gave me the amazing opportunity to rotate through various parts of the company and get hands-on experience.

Before diving into my career at Sellafield, I studied chemical engineering at the University of Leeds. During my time there, I dabbled in some projects related to the nuclear sector, and it really piqued my interest. So, I started exploring the different roles available and what they had to offer.

When I stumbled upon Sellafield’s graduate scheme, it just seemed like a fantastic opportunity—so, of course, I applied!

Thankfully, I got in and kicked off my adventure with a 6-month placement in construction, right on-site in Cumbria.

Being at the heart of where the work happens was something I genuinely enjoyed. Seeing the progress first-hand and interacting with the teams responsible made the job incredibly fulfilling for me.

Apprehension

So, I ended up really liking it here and chose to make Cumbria my new home. Coming from Leeds, it was definitely a shift in lifestyle!

Initially, I didn’t know anyone here, and I must say, Cumbria’s quietness is quite a contrast to city life. I was a bit worried about fitting in and figuring out how to spend my free time without all the city hustle and bustle right outside my door.

Fulfilment

Making the move to Cumbria turned out to be easier than I had anticipated, especially when it came to making new friends. I quickly connected with people in my cohort, and they were happy to join me in weekend activities. I’m still in contact with these friends even now!

Cumbria’s peacefulness and safety have really grown on me, and I’m thankful I decided to relocate here. The quality of life is fantastic, and being near the Lake District feels like a blessing, knowing others travel here for holidays.

I’ve developed a love for fell walking, and along with my partner and our two dogs, we spend our weekends exploring the trails. Plus, living near the beaches provides endless opportunities for outdoor activities.

Playing football has been a great way to meet new people, and I also play cricket for Whitehaven. Since everyone lives nearby, meeting up and socialising is a breeze.

Overall, my lifestyle is much healthier now. I’m grateful to have the chance to spend more time outdoors whenever I feel like it, making my work-life balance much more fulfilling.

Reflection

I would really recommend Cumbria as a place to live. It’s such a wonderful part of the country with its tranquillity, safety, and fantastic job opportunities, especially with Sellafield and its supply chain.

Plus, Sellafield has a mission that stretches over the next century and these long-term prospects really make a difference.

At first, it took me a little while to adapt, but I quickly felt at home. There were plenty of team-building events, and I went from knowing no one to meeting so many welcoming people.

Building a social network has been easy and rewarding. Plus, when people move to Cumbria, it really benefits the region by bringing fresh ideas and perspectives.

One of the highlights of working here is seeing the impact you have on the business.
Everyone’s role plays a part in ensuring Sellafield remains a clean and safe environment for future generations. And, of course, living in Cumbria has its perks. Having the Lake District right on my doorstep means I can enjoy quality time outdoors with family and friends whenever I like.
